Developing Sustainability

In addition to showcasing their commitment to providing personalised services and experiences to Chinese consumers and partners, Nespresso is committed to the notion that coffee can be a positive force for good. From planting and picking coffee beans, and processing and production, to the recycling of coffee capsules, sustainability is at the heart of Nespresso and has been a fundamental pillar of the business.

In China, Nespresso has partnered with organic farms to compost recycled coffee grounds, turning them into organic fertilizer for vegetable cultivation on the farms and reusing them as raw materials for clean energy.

The recycling of used capsules is also one of the most important initiatives for the sustainable development of Nespresso, and they started their offline capsule recycling program in China in 2015 and extended the program online in 2019. They have also been working  with commercial partners such as hotels, restaurants and offices to actively carry out the coffee recycling program. Through partnering with an aluminium factory in Henan Province, these recycled capsules are given a second life, smelted into raw industrial materials which are then put back into production.

In 2022, Nespresso were recognised for meeting strict standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability, and subsequently awarded with a B Corp Certification which reflects the company’s more than 30 years of commitment to sustainability overall.
